K’uik’ui Ranch Name Announcement
September 5, 2025-
After over a year of engagement with the public through PACE meetings, consultation with Native American tribes, and an online naming contest held in partnership with the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust, the San Joaquin River Conservancy Board members voted to unanimously adopt K’uik’ui (Kwik-kwee) Ranch, proposed by a Native American Community Partner, as the new name for the property formerly known as Ball Ranch.
K’uik’ui Ranch is a keystone property of the San Joaquin River Parkway, as it is the property that’s conservation was what lead to the creation of the Parkway and the Conservancy as a whole.
K’uik’ui is the name of the small duck responsible for the beginning of the world according to Gashowu Yokuts and was chosen to symbolize this property as the Parkway beginning, and to honor the history of the ancestral tribes that are native to the region.
Along with the creation of new maps and signage, the Conservancy is working to transition from the previous name, and will begin working on interpretive signage that will honor the history of the property, the Ball Family, and the original community members who worked to protect the San Joaquin River Parkway, and protect the land that we are all able to benefit from today, and for future generations to come.
